What is Microsoft Project Server 2013?

Microsoft Project Server 2013 is a flexible project management, portfolio management, and work management tool built on SharePoint 2013 platform. Some quick highlights of Project Server 2013 include a new metro style user interface, support for mobile devices, multi-tenancy support, single database as against four in case of earlier version, improvements in workflow and demand management, automatic scheduling, improvements in Exchange integration, among others. Project App is the most interesting addition to the new version of Project Server 2013, which is available for purchase and download from the public Office Store or distributed within a private app catalog on SharePoint.

What’s new in Microsoft Project Server 2013?

New Look and Feel: As Project Server 2013 is built on SharePoint Server 2013; it automatically inherits the new metro style user interface that you see in SharePoint 2013.

Automatic Scheduling: In Project Server 2010, users had to click on the calculate button to reschedule their tasks which is not the case with the new version. With Project Server 2013, schedules get updated automatically.

Improvements in Workflow and Demand Management: Project Server 2010 required Visual Studio in order to create workflows. However, Project Server 2013 uses SharePoint Designer to create project workflows for Demand Management.

Better Reporting: Microsoft has tested a lot around the reporting feature in Project Server 2013. The significant improvement around the reporting feature is the introduction of Data feeds that offer access to Project Server reporting data via an URL. REST feeds were included in Project Server 2010, but it was only to derive content from SharePoint in the Project Web App site. However, with Project Server 2013, these feeds also offer you actual Project Server reporting data such as project, assignment and task lists.

Improvements in Resource Calendars: The ability to integrate task updates via Exchange Server was first introduced in Project Server 2010. However, with Project Server 2013, the feature takes you bit further by synchronizing your ‘Out of Office’ message with your resource calendar. Consequently, if you go on leave and include an out-of-office message to your exchange calendar; it will automatically sync with Project Server resource calendar.

Streamlined Task Management and Timesheets: In Project Server 2013, the timesheet user interface is simplified for easier use. Ribbon options are split into multiple tabs, with the most commonly used functions gathered under one tab, which simplifies the reporting process.  Moreover, adding lines to a timesheet has been streamlined. Other major improvement in the timesheet is the historical timesheet data, which now can be kept forever. This allows organizations to preserve old timesheet records for compliance and other records, without considerably disturbing performance.

Improved Security Measures: Microsoft has presented an easier SharePoint-based security model; in this case access to abilities in Project Server is managed through SharePoint security groups.

Integration with Exchange Server: The Exchange integration feature in Project Server 2013 enables you to integrate project task management with Exchange Server 2013 via SharePoint Server 2013. This allows you to have access to your task management data from anywhere in Outlook or OWA. Moreover, if your Exchange is synchronized with your mobile devices, you can access it from your device as well.

Compatibility with most of the Web Browsers: Project Server 2013 is compatible with most of the popular web browsers such as Firefox, Internet Explorer, Chrome, Safari, and more. This makes it easier for you to edit, view, submit, and collaborate on project, portfolio, and other everyday work.

New Project Apps: Make use of apps from the new SharePoint Store to meet unique business needs. You can, if needed, swiftly create and deliver apps that will help you save time off distinct processes or associate to proprietary software systems.

Single Database: All the four Project Server databases, i.e., Draft, Publish, Reporting, and Archive, are merged into a single database. This reduces the costs associated with the data update, backup, disaster recovery, and so on.

What can you achieve from Project Server 2013?

  • A quick start and smooth management of your project and portfolio.
  • Take action and stay informed in more places and on more devices than ever before.
  • Bring vision and effort in line to prioritize initiatives, choose optimal project portfolios, and deliver on your business strategy.
  • Effectively manage resources.
  • Reinforce routine collaboration using the social experiences of SharePoint, which simplify discussions and data sharing.
  • Communicate seamlessly across time and space in order to improve overall teamwork.
  • Make data-driven judgments by providing team members and patrons with the data they need to remain informed and effective.

All in all, Project Server 2013 has definitely taken the project management expectations of organizations across sectors to a higher level. Lot has been changed and improved in the new version of Project Server so that project managers, participants, and business decision makers can get started, line up project portfolio investments and deliver the envisioned business value from virtually anywhere that too seamlessly and effectively.
